SmartDongle

A new issue recently presented itself that we were able to troubleshoot successfully but it was very hard to narrow down. During a recent release of some new HP laptops we started seeing issues with our USB driver loading incorrectly. It was specific to HP’s new laptops shipping with Windows Vista 64 and using AMD 64 bit processors.

During the loading of the SmartDongle driver, an “Error 10” would occur and then fail to install. Unfortunately an error 10 can be pretty broad, however it was related to a manufacturer's installation of a USB driver.

During the setup process of these new laptops, HP was installing a driver called “AMD USB Audio Filter Driver”. According to HP, this driver was to improve the quality of some USB speakers and TV Tuners. This driver prevented the USB SmartDongle from loading correctly. It most likely will interfere with other types of USB devices also. Removing the driver will fix these problems. (Refer to our FAQ for instructions on removing the driver).
